Bluesky's UKAS accredited Fire Resistant Window Installation scheme is designed to provide installers of fire resistant windows and fire resistant glazed screens with the means to demonstrate that their standard of installation will be appropriate and conducted in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. This is achieved by verification that the installer has been suitably trained, followed by an inspection audit of installations conducted at their customer sites, to verify installation carried out by the installer and the operatives under their control has been conducted in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. Ongoing inspections are then conducted once certification has been achieved. Inspection audits may be undertaken on either completed installations, or those that are taking place.
The scheme applies to the installation of internal and external fire resistant windows and glazed screens manufactured from timber, PVCU, aluminium, steel or composite materials. The scheme also applies to the fitment of glazing and replacement glazing to existing fire resistant windows and screens, provided that the manufacturer’s specifications are obtained by the installer and followed when the glazing and re-glazing is carried out.
This scheme is designed to confirm that fire resistant properties of a product are retained through the installation process. The scheme does not cover legislative requirements such as those set out in the Building Regulations, and it is the responsibility of the installer to ensure that these are met.
The scheme applies to the installation of the following categories of fire resistant windows and glazed screens:
- Fire resistant external or internal openable* windows (as tested in accordance with EN 1364-1, EN 1634-1 or BS476-22) which are manufactured either as a complete assembly including glazing, or manufactured unglazed, with the installer sourcing the glazing specification that has been instructed by the window manufacturer.
- Fire resistant glazed screens or non-opening windows (as tested in accordance with EN 1364-1, or BS476-22), either supplied in kit form including glazing, from a single manufacturer, or assembled.
Initial training requirements:
The nominated supervisor will need to demonstrate that they have been appropriately trained and will need to demonstrate that they are competent as part of the scheme requirements. They will also need to demonstrate that they have a documented process to assess the competence of their operatives.
Expectations for the audit visit:
For the Fire Resistant Window Installation scheme customers are required to have a fire window mostly installed, but with the firestopping exposed so that we can inspect the firestopping behind the frame. We don't need to see the full installation process.
